Black Mental Health

A Talk by Ashley Adams MSW (Love Abound in the name of Christ)

About this Talk

Mental health issues are often overlooked or are a challenge to deal with. There are many stigmas associated with mental illness but imagine having a mental illness and being part of a culture that has its own stigmas. In many African Americans, it is a silent crisis that produces an unresolved issue, and it starts early in life. Various factors, including mistrust and disparities, prevent people of color from taking advantage of mental health services (Fripp & Carlson, 2017).

The purpose of this presentation is to bring awareness to the silent crisis of mental health problems in the African American communities. In this presentation, suggestions are made on how to reach the African American population with cultural sensitivity, as African Americans often feel culturally misunderstood.
